Mary Aloe on the Prequel and the Sequel: an Aloe Entertainment Blog

Mary Aloe stepped into the development room at Aloe Entertainment asking, “Prequel or sequel, which are top grossing?” One of the Aloe Entertainment team piped up, “JURASSIC WORLD, sequel.” “Not yet,” Mary Aloe replied, “still FURIOUS 7. How about prequel?” Another Aloe Entertainment development team member jumps in, “SKYFALL…no, wait that’s a sequel of a re-boot or a remake.” “It’s STAR WARS 1 – PHANTOM MENACE.” The discussion Mary Aloe and the Aloe Entertainment team began is about prequels and sequels and how well they are doing, some of which are the top grossing movies of all time. “JURASSIC WORLD has hit some milestones and may become one of the top ten, but for now it’s about #21,” continued Mary Aloe to her team at Aloe Entertainment.

Mary Aloe asked one of the Aloe Entertainment team to bring up a top-grossing film chart. Mary Aloe continued, “As of today, for the top grossing films of all time, the top ten include six sequels, and the top twenty includes a prequel and six more sequels. In that mix are a reboot and remake or two, as well”. Mary Aloe and the Aloe Entertainment team keep abreast of what franchises are doing well and which might be ready for a reboot. Having worked on a sequel and in pre-production on a prequel (of one of the 100 top  grossing films of all time), the Aloe Entertainment team keeps their eyes open for an opportunity to bring to Mary Aloe another prequel or sequel idea. In 2015, 29 movies will be sequels and 1 a prequel. In 2016, 25 releases will be sequels. 

“And more are in the pipeline,” continued Mary Aloe, “and notice that they are not just thrillers, super heroes, or horror franchises.” It was pointed out to the Aloe Entertainment team that TOY STORY, SHREK, FROZEN, DESPICABLE ME, THE FOCKERS, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, MADEA, and many other comedies have done well in sequel or prequel land; many of which are continuing.  “SHREK 2 and TOY STORY 3 are in the top twenty of all time,” Mary Aloe pointed out. “Let’s not lose track of a good story and fine actors and crew when developing any of these, Mary Aloe concluded. The Aloe Entertainment team may connect themselves with other prequels or sequels. Marketing traction and the continuation of loved characters and actors can be a shoe-in. But maker beware, a rehash will go straight to VOD. Remember LEGALLY BLONDE II or SPEED II? Duds. “Quality film-making should never be put aside for a possible buck,” Mary Aloe concluded, leaving the Aloe Entertainment team to their work.

Mary Aloe and Aloe Entertainment History

Mary Aloe is a packaging producer.  She and the Aloe Entertainment team just executive produced Ten Thousand Saints starring Ethan Hawke, Emile Hirsch and Hailee Steinfeld that premiered at Sundance Film Fest 2015 and, after which, garnered a great sale with Screen Media, which will be released Summer 2015. As well, Mary has Wild Oats with the Weinstein’s is released this summer starting Shirley Maclaine, Jessica Lange and Demi Moore. As well, Mary starts Mother Mary this summer, with Lionsgate, that she is producing and co-wrote, as well as, The Ranch and Punjab Tiger - incidentally all three movies are based on true life stories. 

Mary Aloe arranged financing and producer many critically acclaimed features were selected for some of the world’s most prestigious film festivals.  When A Man Falls In The Forest, starring Sharon Stone and Timothy Hutton, was selected for main competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and in the main competition for America’s South By Southwest Film FestivalNumb, starring Matthew Perry and Mary Steenburgen, was selected to have its world premiere in the Discovery section at the Tribeca Film Festival; and Battle In Seattle, a political action drama written and directed by Stuart Townsend and starring Charlize TheronWoody HarrelsonRay Liotta,Channing Tatum, Andre Benjamin Joshua JacksonMartin HendersonConnie Nielsen and Rodriguez. “Battle” had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in main competition and had the biggest sale at the festival and was multi-platformed theatrically across America in fall 2008. Aloe’s other films include While She Was Out, a female action thriller starring Kim Basinger and Lucas Haas; executive produced by Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and jointly produced by Don Murphy (Transformers); and Tortured, starring Laurence Fishburne and James Cromwell, which was released through Magic Box and Sony Pictures. Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever with LGE had its theatrical release in the spring of 2009. Aloe’s first feature film endeavor was in 2004 and entitled Downtown: A Street Tale, starred Genevieve Bujold and Domenica Scorsese and was released with American World Pictures.

Mary Aloe’s foray into the business began in television with producing over eight successful national reality and television talks shows. In 2001, Mary Aloe transitioned into long form television with Columbia TriStar and NBC with The Princess and the Marine, a MOW for NBC Television, the project, chronicling the true story of a Middle Eastern Princess who fell in love with an American Marine, generated so much excitement, it incited the second biggest bidding war in television history. It then became the highest rated Movie of the Week that year for NBC. Aloe executive produced this made for TV movie with Columbia Tri-Star.

However her background is, and still loves reality television. Besides the three shows in development Throwback, Mama’s Boy and Game of Clones, Mary produced Room 401 jointly with partners Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg, premiering on MTV. Mary Aloe has also developed a bevy of reality series  - Geraldo, Susan Powter Show, Caught in the Act, Hard Copy, Current Affair - over nine series for network and syndication
